GUIDELINES SUMMER PROGRAMME FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (SPINS)

Summer Programme for International Students (SPINS) is an exclusive summer school programme offered by the Centre for Management Enhancement (CME@FBA), Faculty of Business and Accountancy (FBA), University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia. The SPINS programme is a flexible short-term summer programme that offers students from all parts of the world an exclusive opportunity to catch a glimpse of studying at the most prestigious university in Malaysia. This programme is offered for college/ university students at all levels including post graduate students. SPINS intake for the undergraduate students will be jointly organized by The International Student Centre (ISC), UM and CME@FBA.
Participants will spend the duration of their choice at FBA, UM and stay within a college of UM or nearby hotels. Participants will have the chance to live in the dormitories, eating at the halls, and receiving lectures by qualified university professors on the topics of their choice. Through SPINS, participants of different nationalities can gain broad perspectives on different cultures and background of Malaysia, the truly Asia experience, while pursuing their studies. Participants will gain experiences living in a multicultural society. The ethnic diversities of Malaysia expose students to a value-added life, global outlook and better understanding of different cultures, ethnic groups and traditions throughout the world. There are three major races in Malaysia namely the Malays, Chinese and Indians together with other ethnic minorities. Apart from socializing with Malaysian students, participants are also exposed to other students from different nationalities. Furthermore, participants will get advantages through guided visits to companies and institutions, excursions to famous attractions and historical landmarks, as well as fun, spare-time activities with a diverse, international group. It is the perfect opportunity to study in the leading and most prestigious university in Malaysia and the top 200 university in the world.

SPINS Programme Mode

SPINS programme offers flexibility through two (2) options to match with participants’ interest and preference. Participants may choose from the following mode:

1. Study Visit Programme

Study Visit Programme (SVP) is a short term programme offered throughout the year with flexibility in the duration of stay, from a minimum of one (1) day to five (5) days.  The aim of the SVP is to expose students to the aspects of Malaysian multi-ethnic culture, histories, lives and traditions. The study sessions will be led by UM academics in small classes for a dynamic learning environment. Participants are offered with a variety of interesting courses and topics for them to choose. These courses are not limited to Malaysian context; they are also part of the graduate modules of business related topics.  The programme has been designed to provide a combination of fun, excitement and educational with no examinations and credit transfers. Participant groups can be from 10 to 50 students of which will be awarded with a Certificate of Participation at the end of the programme. This is the perfect opportunity to experience student life at the best university in Malaysia.

2. Intensive Programme (IP)

Intensive Programme (IP) is a short term intensive programme conducted between two (2) and four (4) weeks. This programme is specially designed for both undergraduates and postgraduates to gain first-hand experience of life as a student at this world-class institution. Participants of this programme will be offered to register in courses of their choice (subject to the rules and regulations governing the programme listed at Para.5). The programme will be held on campus at FBA with lectures conducted by experts and academics of FBA. In addition to the lecture series, participants will have the opportunity to visit companies and participate in excursion activities. Group of participants can be from 30 to 70 students, of which will be awarded with a Certificate of Participation at the end of the programme. In short, this programme provides students with a comprehensive academic exposure, tailored made to their choice of topics and a range of social and cultural activities.

SPINS Eligibility Requirement

SPINS programme invites students from all parts of the world who are mature, academically motivated, willing to broaden their horizons, experience a challenge, and independent. To apply, students must:

  1. be currently enrolled in a college/university
  2. have basic English Language proficiency (it is an added advantage, as courses are conducted in English.)
  3. be matured, academically motivated, willing to broaden their horizons, seeking new experience or challenge, and independent.

Note: Interpretation services into other languages are available for a fee.

SPINS Application Process

Apply to the programme at least three (3) months prior to the beginning of the program so that we can cater for your goals. The application process is as follows:

  2. Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an e-mail from the SPINS Coordinator to discuss the details of your application.
  3. The SPINS admissions committee will meet and start structuring the programme for you.
  4. The Head of Summer Program will issue invitation letter with the agenda of the Summer programme.
